Sermon (02/03/08): The Glory of God, The Word of God, The Son of God [2]

Here is Section 2 – It is in progress, so if you are interested, check back later.

I already have some idea of where I am going. The passages are chosen thematically – and I want to talk about the common themes throughout in order to narrow down the ideas within.

Exodus. (4.21-23); 24: 12-18; (34.34-35) GLORIOUS MOUNTAIN – GIVING OF THE LAW

  • - Israel is God’s Son; serve God’s son or God will strike you [4.22-23]
  • – Moses [24.12]
  • - On Mountain of God with few chosen assistants [24.13]
  • - God’s Gives a Word of Command – The Torah (Law) [24.12]
  • - Cloud on Mountain [24.15]
  • - Six days of Cloud [24.16]
  • - On Seventh Day God Speaks Out of the Cloud [24.16]
  • - Glory of God as Fire [24.17]
  • - (Face shone from presence with the Father) [34.34-35]

Matt 17: 1-9 THE TRANSFIGURATION

  • - On the seventh day [17.1]:
  • - On a Mountain with a few chosen assistants [17.1]
  • - Jesus face shone like the sun [17.2]
  • - Moses is on the Mountain [17.3]
  • - Elijah is on the Mountain [17.3]
  • - Peter wants to build tents [17.4]
  • - A bright cloud on them [17.5]
  • - God’s voice from the Cloud [17.5]
  • - God declares Jesus to be his Beloved Son [17.5]
  • - God Gives a Word of Command – Listen to Him [17.5]
  • - Disciples fall at his feet [17.6]

These items alone carry striking similarities.

Some obvious starting places for my trail to the narrowed points to preach:

  1. Both stories take place on the 7th day. Question: what does the coming of Law have to do with the day of rest?
  2. Glory displays God’s Choice (reinforces the physical memory of the witness).
  3. God’s voice declares God’s Command.
  4. Jesus represents the place of the Law from Ex 24
    1. Where God said, obey the Law… (Ex 24)
    2. …God now says, obey my Son! (Matt 17)
    3. THEREFORE – Jesus is Superior to Moses – and embodies the Law.
  5. Moses has a mountain. Jesus has a mountain. Does Elijah have a mountain?
    1. Yes: on Mt Carmel with the Prophets of Baal [1 Kg 18] – Fire declares God’s man.
      1. 37 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD -he is God! The LORD -he is God!”
    2. Mt Horeb: Elijah was fleeing FROM his death.
      1. (1 Kg 19.15-16) The LORD said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.
